A business trip to Strasbourg: where to stay instead

A night away is judged on three things: what it costs the company, how it is invoiced, and what you do between seven in the evening and the next morning. The third is nearly always forgotten, and it is the one that separates a bearable trip from one you endure.
The city-centre hotel
The default, and a fair one when the meeting is within walking distance. Central Strasbourg is expensive, particularly during parliamentary sessions and the Christmas market, when rates double without the room changing.
Invoicing is simple, breakfast is extra, and the evening happens in eighteen square metres with a television bolted to the wall.
The aparthotel
Better value over several nights: a kitchenette, a little space, a weekly rate. The trade-off is uniformity, and a location often chosen for land prices rather than for the neighbourhood.
The holiday flat
This is the category that has changed most. A well-kept flat in a neighbouring town costs less than a room in the centre, comes with a proper kitchen and bathroom, and can be booked direct with the operator, with an invoice in the company name.
Schiltigheim is a good example: it borders Strasbourg, sits on the tram network, is five minutes from the Espace Européen de l’Entreprise, the largest business park in the metropolitan area, and a quarter of an hour from the European quarter.
What an evening changes
